This is the key point, I think. I teach at a college that serves mostly low-income students, a student body that is predominantly black and brown. These kids are seeking technical degrees, yet they are forced to take a full array of academic courses. Most view these courses as a waste of their time and, more importantly, their money. Don’t get me wrong, all students benefit from a good academic base, from writing and critical-thinking skills, but tuition, books, transportation to class are expenses that can be difficult to meet when students are paying rent and utilities or helping their families with living expenses. Free college is needed — and not just two-year college. But we can start there.
