The Novel Coronavirus Does Not Respect Borders
The news here is good. Mostly. A surge of infections caused by the Omicron variant appears to be waning, which should provide relief to overburdened emergency rooms and hospitals. Vaccinations proceed apace, despite pockets of anti-vax activism on the fringe.
“Things are looking good,” Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the Biden administration’s top adviser on the pandemic, said on Sunday. “We don’t want to get overconfident, but they look like they’re going in the right direction right now.”
Right now. Maybe. Overconfidence is an American trait. The science may point in a different directions. The same Times article that quotes Fauci’s statement of relief, raised questions about whether Covid-19 can be eradicated, or whether it might become an endemic, circulating but less severe virus. Like the flu.
